Sport

There are so many different dog sports and many of them are suitable for an active breed such as the Wheaten Terrier. Bear in mind though, that terriers are independent dogs and their training must always be positive.

Obedience

Many Wheatens do great in obedience, use your imagination and sense of humour when training your Wheaten.

Tracking and rescue are sports that are suitable for the Wheaten Terrier, it is fun to train even if you do not aim to compete.

Agility

Agility was first presented at Cruft's in 1978 and was introduced to Swedenby Marie Hansson who also is the author of some very good books about Agility. Agility is the fastest growing dog sport in Sweden, and no wonder!

In Sweden it is recommended that the dog should be 12 months old before training agility and you can competet from the age of 18 months.

If you are keen on training Agility your dog must be obedient and able to be without leash together with other dogs.

The best start for agility-training is to work on general obedience, and train balance. It is also wise to make a check on your dog's hip status around 18-24 mopnths if you intend to compete.

Game-tracking

Game-tracking has become very popular during the last years. The intention is actually to train dogs to find wounded game but it is also a very good activity for the Wheaten. You can also compete to obtain a champion title which a couple of Wheatens have accomplished during recent years.
