Leisure

The Wheaten Terrier is an active breed who needs be properly trained and activated. to feel good. Shows and competitions are fun for the owner - sometimes also for the dog - but most important is to give your dog a good "everyday life" with challenges and problems to solve. These challenges do not have to be complicated, use your imagination!

Hereunder, you will find some ideas to be used while walking your wheaten in the woods, along the beach or wherever you choose to go....

Nose:

Using the nose demands a lot of concentration from the dog and is also a "calming"activity.
You can start with the little puppy, by spreading out a handful of something really "yummy"in the garden, a sausage cut into really small pieces for instance, and let the little puppy use his nose in order to find the goodies...

Of course, this game could also be made indoors.

Balance:

Trainging the dog's natural balance is great for his self-confidence and physical development.
This could be made very easily, hide some goodies on top of stones or on trees, soon your dog will get wonderful exercise jumping up and down and searching for the goodies, he will soon be convinced that goodies actually "grow" on trees...

Be very sure when you train your dog to climb and creep that the environment is really safe! Also, bear in mind that these challenges should be fun, never force the dog to do anything that seems to make him uncomfortable, and be very generous when he succeeds!

Stay:

This is one of the most important things for the young puppy to learn!
The dog must for example never ever be allowed to jump from the trunk of the car without permission.

Come:

Start to train the puppy as early as possible by letting him find you, never chase the puppy! Call for your pup at least ten times during each walk you take but only one put him on leash once of these times!>
